Highlights

  • High-resolution 8.4-inch screen
  • Helio X20 deca-core CPU
  • 3GB RAM & 32GB storage
  • 4G LTE with phone capabilities
  • Full metal body
  • Android 8.0 Oreo

Chuwi Hi9 Pro: The Basics

Even though the Chuwi Hi9 Pro is very affordable, it does feature a full metal body. In fact, even the power button and volume controls are aluminum. With 7.9 millimeters it is quite thick, so this certainly indicates its price. The weight is fine though with 384 grams.

We are getting a USB type C port on the bottom of the tablet, as well as a microSD card slot and a SIM card slot. There is an 8-megapixel camera on the back and the webcam offers a resolution of 5 megapixels. Since this is a cheap tablet, we do not get a fingerprint sensor or facial recognition.

The Chuwi Hi9 Pro features an 8.4-inch display with an aspect ratio of 16:10. Its IPS panel has a very high resolution of 2560 x 1600 pixels. You cannot use the touchscreen with an active pen.

Underneath the screen sits a fast MediaTek Helio X20 deca-core processor. Yes, this chipset consists of ten cores in total. There are two powerful 2.3GHz Cortex A72 cores that are used for high-performance bursts. Four 1.85GHz Cortex A53 cores are used for everyday tasks and there are four additional 1.4GHz Cortex A53 chips to save some battery.

In addition to the deca-core processor, the Chuwi Hi9 Pro features 3GB of RAM and a 32GB internal eMMC flash storage. Again, you can expand that using a microSD card.

The tablet comes with a build-in LTE 4G module so you can use it on the go without having to connect to Wi-Fi. In fact, you can even make phone calls with this tablet. There’s even an ear piece above the screen.

Android 8.0 Oreo And Google Play Store

Chuwi is shipping the Hi9 Pro with Android 8.0 Oreo out of the box. This makes it one of the first China tablets to be delivered with Oreo directly. While the interface is customized just a bit, it is mostly vanilla Android.

Unlike some competitors, it is running the Google Play Store. So, you will be able to install most apps you are used to from your phone. However, it might be that you won’t find Netflix in the Play Store. If that is the case, you can just use the APK from the official Netflix support website.

Reviews & Videos

While the Chuwi Hi9 Pro is just being released, there are a couple of reviews and videos out there already. However, as of now, no reviewer could have had it longer than a couple of days. Here are some interesting videos you might want to watch before you buy this tablet:

Price & Availability

Chuwi announced the Chuwi Hi9 Pro in August 2018. Shortly after its announcement, shops like GearBest started to sell this tablet. Usually, you won’t be able to get it at your local retailer. Well, unless you are based in mainland China. However, it is very easy to import through several shops.

The Chuwi Hi9 Pro usually costs just under 200 US Dollars. You might be able to find deals too.

Alternatives

There are some interesting alternatives to the Chuwi Hi9 Pro. A direct competitor is the Xiaomi Mi Pad 4 which features an 8-inch display too. While the screen has a full HD resolution only, the internal hardware should be a bit faster. It is running Android 8.0 Oreo as well.

A much faster alternative is the Huawei MediaPad M5 8 (review). Yes, it has the same high-resolution screen but much faster internal hardware. In addition to that, it offers premium features like good speakers and a fingerprint reader.

In case you are looking for a even cheaper tablet, you could check out the FNF iFive Mini 4S (review). Usually, it costs around 100 US Dollars. While it is a bit weaker, it too offers a nice 8-inch screen.

Chuwi Hi9 Pro
Considering its price, the Chuwi Hi9 Pro offers an outstanding 8.4-inch display, a good build-quality and almost vanilla Android 8.0 Oreo. However, the performance is not as good as you might expect and it does not have premium features like a fingerprint scanner. However, again, considering its price, the Chuwi Hi9 Pro offers a great value.
