Lenovo Smart Tab M8: The Basics
Talking of its stand-out feature, the Chinese company has included a Google Assistant Ambient Mode in the Smart Tab M8 tablet. This feature, when paired with the included Smart Charging Station, turns the tablet into a smart home display that is always listening for your ‘OK Google’ command. You can undock the device to use as a normal tablet. A pair of far-field microphones and speakers with Dolby Atmos help facilitate the feature.
Over at the front, you will find an 8-inch HD IPS display that can touch 350 nits of peak brightness. The Smart Tab M8 uses metal for its back that should be quite sturdy besides giving a premium feel. Lenovo will make this tablet available in two variants with one of them being enabled for 4G LTE connectivity along with the standard Wi-Fi and Bluetooth options. A 5000mAh battery is housed inside this Lenovo tablet that charges using a micro USB port.
An entry-level MediaTek A22 chipset powers this tablet and some other devices from the company. Lenovo included 2GB of RAM that is coupled with either 16GB or 32GB of internal memory. A 5MP auto-focus camera sits on the back while a fixed-focus 2MP sensor is provided for taking selfies. The tablet comes loaded with Android 9 Pie together with a dedicated kids’ mode. The Lenovo Smart Tab M8 retains the 3.5mm headphone jack and will be available in two color options—Onyx Black and Platinum Grey.

Lenovo Smart Tab M8 Alternatives
The tablet that comes closest to this Lenovo offering and its features is the Amazon Fire HD 8 (review) that also supports a docking station for enabling Alexa-based Show Mode. Samsung’s 2019 Galaxy Tab A 8 costs as much as the Smart Tab M8 and rocks a similar set of internals. You can go for the Samsung device if it’s available in your region. You also have the Huawei MediaPad M5 Lite 8 (review) in the same price segment but with a significantly better processor and display resolution.
For a slightly more, you can get your hands on the Galaxy Tab A 8.0 with S Pen (review) which, as its name makes it clear, comes with an S Pen for notetaking and doodling. If performance is something you don’t wish to compromise on, then the Huawei MediaPad M6 8.4 is an excellent option. It offers top-notch internals in a compact body, and so does the Apple iPad Mini 2019 (review). The compact Apple tablet now also supports the Apple Pencil, albeit the first-generation one.
