Lenovo Tab M8: The Basics

With the second generation of the Tab M8, Lenovo has introduced a metal build for the tab’s back giving you a premium feel. The tablet has a flat back with antenna lines running along the top and bottom edges and the rear camera protruding a bit. On the flip side, you will find an 8-inch IPS display taking up most of the space with thin surrounding bezels. The display has either an HD or a full HD resolution depending on the model you’re holding.

The Lenovo Tab M8 comes preinstalled with Android 9 Pie which has some added features like multi-user profiles. The built-in face recognition system identifies the person and switches to their profile. It has a dedicated Kid’s Mode 3.0 that is packed with content for kids under 12 with some parental controls in place. An entry-level quad-core MediaTek processor runs inside the tablet along with 2GB/3GB of RAM and 16GB/32GB of onboard storage that can be further expanded.

A Dolby Audio-tuned speaker sits on one side of the compact tablet which also has a single microphone. You can also opt for its 4G LTE variant with Bluetooth 5.0 and Wi-Fi staying standard across the board. The Chinese company has included some form of water and dust resistance to the Tab M8 that holds a 5000mAh battery. The 3.5mm headphone jack has been retained while you will find a 5MP rear-facing camera and a 2MP one on the front.

Lenovo Tab M8 Alternatives

Samsung’s budget offering for 2019—the Galaxy Tab A 8 2019—could easily replace this Lenovo tablet. Its internals are similar to the Tab M8, which isn’t surprising since they target the same price segment. Launched last year, the Amazon Fire HD 8 2018 (review) is another 8-inch tablet worth checking out. It costs well under $100 and comes baked with a host of entertainment apps while offering certain exclusive features like Alexa hands-free.

For around $169, the Huawei MediaPad M5 Lite 8 (review) actually offers an improved set of specifications with 3GB/4GB of RAM and a more powerful Kirin 710 chipset. Talking about the Chinese tablets, the Chuwi Hi8 Se (review) with a price tag of $99 could also be considered. With price no bar, the Apple iPad Mini 2019 (review) stands tall as the best 8-inch tablet out there.
