Best Card Games Android

Card games have been an excellent way to pass the time, even before phones and tablets. However, the addition of technology makes playing the best card games much simpler, as you don’t have to worry about bringing a deck with you.

I’m a big card game enthusiast, particularly the trading card games (TCG) types, and I’ve played some of these for quite a bit now. Some are relatively new. I’ll give you a low down on these games and tell you if they’re worth playing.

Top 10 Card Games to Play on Your Android Tablet

Whether you’re looking for classic, competitive, or creative card games, there is something for everyone on the list. I’ve been a long-time Magic and Hearthstone player, and I’ll surely recommend those.

The one game that surprised me was Marvel Snap! The quick pace and short games are some of the things that I enjoy after experiencing ultra-long games in other games. Of course, if you’ve read my review of the best strategy games, I’m a big fan of Slay the Spire.

And don’t sleep on Exploding Kittens. It’s hilarious!

Classic Card Games

Microsoft Solitaire Collection

Ah, Solitaire. It was the OG computer game and ultimate time killer a few decades ago. If you’ve used a desktop, you’re probably familiar with the card games Microsoft has bundled with their Windows software. Now, they take this beloved classic and inject a dose of modern polish into your mobile device.

Whether you’re a seasoned Solitaire veteran reminiscing about the pre-internet days or a curious newcomer looking for a relaxing mental workout, the Collection welcomes you with open arms.

Don’t let the Solitaire in the name fool you, though, as the app isn’t a one-trick pony. Of course, Klondike is the most familiar Solitaire version, but you can also play Spider, FreeCell, Pyramid, and other variations.

Apart from the nostalgia, the fact that Microsoft goes beyond the basics and makes it more than just a remake of their classic is enough to keep me returning to playing some Solitaire. There are daily challenges that keep you engaged and theme packs to spice up the game’s visuals.

It’s hard to find fault in a free and well-polished classic. It’s endlessly replayable, which keeps me opening it when I have a few minutes to spare, like when I’m waiting for an appointment. The engaging challenges and user-friendly interface make it a must-have for casual gamers and card game enthusiasts.

UNO!

UNO! Screenshot

You remember the first time you played UNO! I sure did. The app brings the iconic party game to your fingertips, offering a vibrant and accessible experience for players of all ages.

What I like about the app is that it stays the same as the original card game experience. From the simple rules and deep strategy involved, don’t underestimate UNO!’s seemingly basic gameplay. Matching colors and numbers might seem straightforward, but playing and discarding the right cards at the right time are some of the keys to winning.

Bringing a deck of UNO! Cards might not be at the top of your priority list when you go to parties. But the app makes playing it on the go incredibly smooth. The intuitive interface is easy to navigate, even for younger players. Go online, and you can connect with friends and family to start playing another round.

While UNO! might not offer the deepest strategic experience in a card game on your Android tablet or phone, its accessibility and emphasis on social interaction make it a winner. It’s a fantastic app for families looking for a fun and engaging way to pass the time.

Trading Card Game (TCG) or Collectible Card Games (CCG)

Marvel Snap

Marvel Snap Screenshot

This card game is undoubtedly a newcomer in the digital TCG game space, and it’s a blast. From Hearthstone’s original makers teamed up with Marvel to create a lightning-paced card battler where strategy and luck collide.

In Marvel Snap, forget about mana systems and intricate combos, as the game’s general rules are simple. Throw down iconic Marvel characters across the board to gain control of it in a blitz.

Whether you’re a seasoned TCG player or a newcomer, Snap welcomes you with open arms. The one thing I enjoy about the game is it’s easy to get into. I didn’t expect it to get so addictive, but I played round after round.

Yes, it’s easy to pick up, but don’t underestimate its depth. Strategic card placement and timely Snaps add to the game’s complexity and play a part in earning bonus rewards. The fact that matches rarely exceed five minutes makes it an excellent game to play while you’re on the go.

The breakneck pace is perfect for casual bursts of strategic games. It’s one game I always have on my devices, as I can seamlessly fit into my busy schedule.

Hearthstone

Hearthstone Screenshot

As a fan of Blizzard games, especially Warcraft, I can say that Hearthstone is one of my favorite card games to play. Now a veteran in the digital CCG scene, it offers the classic experience complete with that Blizzard polish.

Build decks from nine diverse hero classes, each wielding unique mechanics and strategies. The classic turn-based gameplay focuses on mana management, strategic unit placement, and powerful spells as you climb the ladder.

You can expect regular content updates that ensure a constantly evolving meta so each season differs from the ones before.

Hearthstone caters to both CCG enthusiasts and newcomers. The intuitive interface and charming visuals are easy to pick up. There’s also a lot of strategic depth as the nine distinct hero classes provide diverse playstyles. If you’re a seasoned veteran, the ranked ladder and competitive tournaments offer deckbuilding opportunities and endless challenges.

Casual players don’t have to worry, as game modes like Brawl and Battlegrounds provide an easy way to enjoy the game. It still retains its competitiveness, but you don’t need to be up to date with the latest cards and content.

Of course, as with all Blizzard games, there’s the lore. It’s one aspect of the game that I greatly enjoy, giving life to your favorite heroes.

Magic: the Gathering Arena

Magic: the Gathering Arena Screenshot

Stepping into the digital space, Magic: the Gathering Arena faithfully reflects the depth and complexity of its physical counterpart. Build decks from thousands of cards across numerous sets, employing mana, creatures, spells, and more in strategic battles.

As a Magic: the Gathering player, I found it difficult to fit Friday Night Magic tournaments into my busy schedule. You can imagine how excited I was to hear they’re finally launching a digital version. It did not disappoint, with all the mechanics, quirks, and gameplay of the physical card game.

Due to the game’s complexity, the primary target is avid Magic players seeking a convenient digital experience. The vast card pool and complex mechanics can be overwhelming for newcomers. For veterans like me, it’s a dream come true.

Regular updates introduce new cards and formats in line with the cardboard version. It allows you to seamlessly play on the game’s digital or traditional versions.

If you’re a newcomer to the game, Arena offers an intuitive way to learn with Tutorial Mode. It will show you how to play the game and the controls, not the nuances.

Gwent: The Witcher Card Game

Gwent Screenshot

If you’re familiar with The Witcher from the books, game, or the Netflix show, you’ve likely heard about Gwent. Now, it’s not just another digital card game but a portal into the rich lore and captivating world.

It’s a game that blends strategic depth with familiar characters, offering a unique experience for card game enthusiasts and Witcher fans. You’ll instantly recognize iconic factions and heroes brought to life in the cards. Each faction boasts unique mechanics and strategies, immersing you in the diverse world of the Witcher universe.

If you’re a Witcher 3: Wild Hunt player, you’ll notice some deviations from the original, but it still offers a refreshing twist. In the mobile version, tactical unit placement and the strategic use of different abilities are crucial to winning battles against other players.

Now, I haven’t played as much Gwent as I was playing Wild Hunt, so you can say I was a newbie when I checked out this game. It’s an easy game, and the well-crafted tutorial makes it welcoming.

Of course, the beauty of it lies far beyond its gameplay, as it captures the essence of The Witcher franchise on your mobile phone.

Legends of Runeterra

Legends of Runeterra Screenshot

From Warcraft to The Witcher, now let’s dive deep into League of Legends and its digital TCG counterpart, Legends of Runeterra. It’s where your beloved League champions clash in dynamic and lore-infused duels.

Unlike Marvel Snap, Legends of Runeterra feels like Magic or Hearthstone as it uses a traditional mana system. You draw spells each turn and utilize them for unit deployment or to unleash powerful abilities.

However, unlike other similar card games, your champions aren’t just powerful cards, as they also level up and unlock skills and abilities. This feature adds another layer of strategic depth and excitement at every match.

Since League of Legends is constantly evolving, Runeterra follows suit. Expect regular content updates introducing new regions, champions, and card sets that keep the meta fresh and exciting.

I’m not a big League of Legends fan, but Runeterra’s excitement gives me a peek into the lore, allowing me to appreciate it more, even as a casual player.

Unique Card Games

Exploding Kittens

Exploding Kittens Screenshot

Exploding Kittens isn’t your average card game. It’s the purr-fect storm of humor, suspense, and strategic chaos, all wrapped in a playful deck of illustrated felines.

Forget the traditional card suits and ranks. In Exploding Kittens, you get adorable cats with ridiculous names like “Beard Cat” that hold the key to victory. The name of the game is to draw cards, avoid the exploding kittens, and use hilarious defuse cards.

It’s a simple yet unpredictable game that keeps everyone on edge. The humor ensures laughter erupts as often as the dreaded Exploding Kitten card.

The one thing I enjoy the most about the game is it throws traditional card game mechanics out the window. The focus is on lighthearted fun, bluffing, and taking calculated risks. Even though it’s a party game, there’s a lot of strategy and depth that you need to utilize to play the game.

If you’re looking for a unique game experience that’s equal parts hilarious and suspenseful, Exploding Kittens is one that constantly delivers. It’s not free, but for only $1.99, you’ll get access to all the physical card game expansions. It’s still a steal if you ask me.

Cultist Simulator

Cultist Simulator Screenshot

A word of caution before you download Cultist Simulator: this game isn’t for the faint of heart. However, it will surely deliver if you seek an unconventional card game experience.

Forget traditional card games. Here, the cards represent characters, rituals, locations, and philosophies. You build your deck to cultivate your chosen path, where you manipulate followers, acquire resources, and summon other entities.

It’s a game that shines on a tablet screen’s real estate, allowing you to appreciate the detailed artwork and cryptic symbols. The larger display will let you spread your cards and think about how they connect.

Since it offers a unique experience, the learning curve is steep. I even had a slightly more difficult time learning it as it throws traditional card game mechanics out the window. It’s more about exploration and experimentation, giving it an additional layer of depth.

You’ll also see the Lovecraftian influence in every aspect of the game. Expect unsettling imagery and bizarre encounters that are not for lighthearted entertainment. However, if you enjoy a mind-bending experience, this game is for you.

Slay the Spire

Slay the Spire Screenshot

If you’re looking for a unique card game experience, Slay the Spire will deliver. It’s a game that takes roguelikes and deckbuilding to an entirely new level. As an aspiring climber, you battle your way up the treacherous spire, using a strategic deck of cards to defeat increasingly challenging enemies.

As a card game, deckbuilding is the heart and soul of Slay the Spire. Every time you defeat enemies, you’ll get a chance to collect additional cards to improve your deck. It can get punishing but quickly turns rewarding once the deck comes together and starts clicking.

My favorite part of playing Slay the Spire is constantly optimizing your deck to defeat more powerful monsters, including the floor guardians. My tip is that you want to pick up cards that synergize with your hero and current cards in your deck.

However, the game is for more strategic gamers, and the difficulty can be too steep for casual players. It’s not that beginners can’t enjoy the game right away, but it takes patience to get the hang of it.

Just be prepared for a steep learning curve and the occasional soul-crushing defeat as it’s a game that rewards perseverance and strategic thinking.
