XP Pen Magic Drawing Pad: An Overview
The Magic Drawing Pad comes with everything you need for illustrations and notetaking out-of-the-box, and a big part of it involves the X3 Pro Pencil which has 16K levels of pressure sensitivity. You also get a glove for easier movements on the screen and replacement pen tips. Another aspect involves the “papery feel” from the X-Paper surface which XP Pen says uses “AG etched technology to emulate the friction and resistance of premium paper as you move the stylus across the surface of the pad, while reducing unwanted glare and fingerprints.” The 12.2-inch display with a 3:2 ratio comes close to the size of writing on a Letter- or A4-sized paper. For note-taking, this allows you to write at a size that you’re comfortable with. XP Pen has also chosen to include several apps meant for drawing and notetaking, including:
- ArtRage Oils (for art)
- Bamboo Paper (for notetaking and writing)
- Concepts (for art)
- Notes (for notetaking and writing)
- ibisPaint X (for art)
- MediBang Paint (for art)
- WPS Office – for annotating PDFs
On the performance front, the XP Pen Magic Drawing Pad comes with an eight-core MT8771 processor and ARM G57 MC2 GPU, which performs at a lower-mid tier based on our Geekbench 5 and 3D Mark benchmarks. XP Pen quotes the battery life of the Magic Drawing Pen to be 13 hours at 30% brightness. We came to a different conclusion using our YouTube, 100% brightness test.
Pricing and Availability
Official prices for the Magic Drawing Pad as of January 2024 are $499 or 499 Euros.
Magic Drawing Pad Alternatives
The Magic Drawing Pad’s price wedges it between two competitors. You could save $150 and buy the Lenovo Tab P12 (379 Euros/$349) or pay $100 more for a Samsung Galaxy Tab S9 FE+ (599 Euro/$599). Both include a stylus, and are about 12″ in size but have 128GB of storage. Note that the Magic Drawing Pad comes with 256GB by default at its $499 price tag — on the other two tablets, you will pay extra to get 256GB of storage. The Lenovo Tab P12 offers competitive performance at a lower price, while the Samsung Galaxy Tab S9 FE+ offers better performance and a higher refresh rate. Whether the Magic Drawing Pad comes down to whether you enjoy the writing and drawing experience on XP Pen’s latest product, as we elaborate in our review of the Magic Drawing Pad.
