Panasonic Toughbook G2 mk2: The Basics

Designed for first responders and those needing a tablet that can withstand the outdoors, the Panasonic Toughbook G2 mk2 is certified to withstand drops that can damage standard devices. It also has an IP65 rating against water and dust, which is critical for outdoor environments. There’s only one color, black.

The Toughbook G2 mk2 runs Windows 11 Pro on an Intel Core i51245U Pro or i71270P vPro CPU with integrated graphics. The minimum RAM is 16GB, but you can expand it to 32GB. The tablet has 512GB of internal storage, but you can also use a microSD card or detachable SSDs (sold separately) to make room for more files. In terms of ports, you have a USB-A, Thunderbolt, and LAN port, along with two expansion slots. These slots can accept fingerprint readers, smart card readers, NFC readers, micro-SD cards and barcode readers, among other accessories.

The standard battery capacity is 4360mAh, which the company claims is enough for seven hours of usage. However, those who are in the field for longer can slot in an extended battery rated at 6300mAh. It’s said to last for 12 hours.

Gamers and most users won’t need a rugged tablet like the Toughbook G2 mk2. While impressive, it’s better to stick to the alternatives we’ll cover below.

Panasonic Toughbook G2 mk2 Alternatives

We recommend the Samsung Galaxy Tab Active3 if you want a smaller rugged tablet that runs Android. It may be an older model from several years ago, but we highly recommend it for outdoors users who want a more affordable option, along with features like an active S Pen, Samsung DeX (for desktop mode, best used with monitors), a fingerprint reader and LTE if you get the correct variant. This tablet is rated IP68, which makes it more robust.

However, if you want a larger tablet, we highly recommend the Doogee R20 rugged tablet. It is also an Android device but has a slightly larger 10.4-inch screen compared to the Panasonic Toughbook G2 mk2. It has a MediaTek Helio G99 chipset, 3.5mm headphone jack, LTE connectivity and plenty of storage. Doogee protects this tablet with IP68 and IP69K ratings plus MIL-STD-810H certification.
