Galaxy Tab S9 FE and S9 FE+ Pack Punch But With DeX Downgrade
Tab S9 FE series reportedly lacks Samsung DeX support.
Today, Samsung revealed the highly anticipated Galaxy Tab S9 FE and Tab S9 FE+. Although both tablets share a similar exterior, they differ in terms of internal specifications and screen sizes. Despite their impressive features, SamMobile reports that one aspect may disappoint certain users.
In a report, folks at SamMobile reveal their experience using the Tab S9 FE and Tab S9 FE+. The report states that after using a pre-release Galaxy Tab S9 FE+ unit for a week before Samsung’s official announcement, they discovered that the Tab S9 FE tablets are lacking in one key area: Samsung DeX. Surprisingly, neither the Galaxy Tab S9 FE nor the Tab S9 FE+ supports DeX when connected to external monitors and TVs. The only way to use DeX on these new Fan Edition tablets is on the device itself.
Explaining further, the report reveals that the cause behind the incompatibility is due the USB downgrade. Upon investigation, they discovered that the two latest models of the FE tablet have USB-C 2.0 instead of USB-C 3.2. This means that they lack DisplayPort capabilities, which may be the cause of the Galaxy Tab S9 FE series’ inability to run DeX externally. However, it does not explain the absence of Wireless DeX. This inconsistency is particularly puzzling since the previous model, Galaxy Tab S7 FE has USB-C 3.2 with DP and supports DeX on a monitor/TV, and the Galaxy S23 FE can also run DeX.
Regardless of Samsung’s rationale, the only way to use DeX on the Galaxy Tab S9 FE and S9 FE+ is to operate the desktop setup directly on the tablet by connecting a keyboard cover or a mouse and keyboard through a dongle.
It’s plausible that the retail models will allow wireless DeX and DeX on TVs and monitors, and we will get to know about it when we get our hands on both tablets for the review.
If the retail units also exhibit the same problem, it could potentially be a deal breaker for users who depend on Samsung’s popular DeX feature and its ability to effortlessly connect and improve productivity by projecting tablet content on a larger display.
With or without DeX support, the Galaxy Tab S9 FE series seems to be a great alternative for budget buyers. These tablets boast impressive features, such as a sturdy metal body, an IP68 rating, and an S Pen. What’s even more appealing is their competitive pricing, with the base model starting at only $499 – a price that outperforms similar products in the market.
