Amazon’s affordable tablets regularly manage to mingle their way into our best lists. The Amazon Fire tablets are available in 10-inch, 8-inch, and 7-inch of sizes and offer a top price-performance ratio. The tablets are robustly built and can even be handed to the youngest members of the family without much hesitation.

We offer you an overview of the current Amazon Fire tablet models in this article and link to our reviews.

The Best Amazon Fire tablets: An Overview

  • Best value Amazon tablet: Amazon Fire HD 10 2023 (at Amazon*). The Amazon Fire HD 10 2023 costs $140 and has a 10.1-inch display with a 1920 x 1200 pixel resolution. The quad-core processor provides performance for basic entertainment and light gaming. It’s by no means a premium device, but it has features that maximize its value.
  • Best Performance: Amazon Fire Max 11 (at Amazon*). For a tablet that costs $230, it’s the best-performing Amazon device you can get. It also sports a more modern design with a full-metal body. The 11-inch display with a 2000 x 1200 pixel resolution makes it a great entertainment and productivity tablet. The octa-core processor and 4GB of RAM allow it to multitask easily.
  • 10-inch tablets with solid performance: Amazon Fire HD 10 and Fire HD 10 Plus (at Amazon*). The Amazon Fire HD 10 costs $150 and only marginally differs from the Fire HD 10 Plus, which costs around $180. Both versions are good 10-inch entertainment tablets for enjoying Amazon Video, Netflix and co, and occasionally gaming. The displays have a resolution of 1920 x 1200 pixels. The tablets’ performance is not outstanding, but most games can be played well with lowered graphics settings.
  • Budget pricing with decent performance: Amazon Fire HD 8 Plus (at Amazon*). The Amazon Fire HD 8 Plus costs $120 and has an 8-inch display with a resolution of 1280 x 800 pixels and 60 Hz. The performance is sufficient for gaming with low graphics settings. As with the other Fire HD tablets, we particularly like that Alexa and Echo Show modes are on board. The battery runtime is also good.
  • Affordable but underperforming tablet: Amazon Fire HD 8 (at Amazon*): The Amazon Fire HD 8 hardly differs from its big brother Fire HD 8 Plus, but it only has 2 GB of RAM instead of 3 GB. This difference makes a noticeable difference in everyday use – especially when gaming. Games like Asphalt 9 often crashed or did not run smoothly. We therefore recommend buying the $20 more expensive Amazon Fire HD 8 Plus.
  • Value for money tablet with basic performance: Amazon Fire 7 2022 (at Amazon*): The Amazon Fire 7 costs just $60. The tablet has a 7-inch screen with a resolution of 1024 x 600 pixels. The hardware is weak but is sufficient for gaming, streaming, surfing the web and other light applications.

The Best Amazon Fire tablets: An Overview

Let’s now take a look at the devices in detail.

Amazon Fire HD 10 2023 review

Amazon Fire HD 10 2023 Specs
Display Size10.1-inch
1920 x 1200 pixel resolution
ProcessorMediatek MT8186A
RAM3 GB
Storage32 GB or 64 GB
Expandable up to 1 TB

Pros

  • Affordable
  • Good build quality
  • Decent display for its price
  • Handy Alexa command center

Cons

  • Not a lot of updates compared to the 2021 model
  • Uses the Amazon ecosystem

For a sub $200 ten-inch tablet, the 2023 Amazon Fire HD 10 version might make you do a double take. Now, it won’t win any awards in the innovative design department. We’re talking thick bezels and a plastic build that feels, well, plastic-y. Plus, it’s on the hefty side at 337 g.

But hey, for the price tag, you get a surprisingly portable entertainment machine at your fingertips. Finally, Amazon has decided to equip it with a USB-C charging port, a microSD card slot for expandable storage, and a headphone jack – a welcome sight in 2024.

When it comes to the hardware, it gets interesting, considering its price point. It has a Mediatek MT8186A quad-core processor and 3GB of RAM. For storage, there’s an option between 32 GB and 64 GB. It’s not a speed demon by any means, but it holds its own for browsing the web, catching up on YouTube, or reading Kindle books.

Multitasking isn’t the Fire HD 10’s forte, as it wants to take it one app at a time.

The 10.1-inch LCD has a resolution of 1920 x 1200 pixels. It’s not the sharpest on the block, but the colors and viewing angles are decent. Indoors, you’re fine using it under controlled lighting. Outdoors are a different story as the tablet does not have enough nits to counteract bright environments.

There’s only one speaker on the Fire HD 10, and it gets the job done, especially in quiet environments. It’s enough for watching movies in bed or chilling out on the couch. However, when chatting with Alexa in a noisy environment, you’re better off reaching for your phone.

As with all Amazon tablets, it runs on Fire OS, which is based on Android. It also comes with Alexa, with built-in Echo Show mode, so that you can use it as a control center. There’s an option to get a version with Lockscreen Ads, but during our testing, we didn’t find the ads to be a huge dealbreaker.

If there’s a winner here, it’s the tablet’s battery life. During our tests, it lasted 10 hours, which is plenty of juice for a long journey or a movie marathon.

The Amazon Fire HD 10 2023 is a big-screen tablet for those on a tight budget. Don’t expect super-fast response times and performance.

Amazon Fire Max 11 2023: Best Performing Tablet

Amazon Fire Max 11

Amazon Fire Max 11 2023 Specs
Display Size11-inch
2000 x 1200 pixel resolution
ProcessorMediatek MT8188J
RAM4 GB
Storage64 GB or 128 GB
Expandable up to 1 TB

Pros

  • Big and vibrant display
  • New modern design
  • Great performance
  • Access to Amazon ecosystem

Cons

  • Lack of Google app support is still an issue
  • Price can go up with accessories

The new Amazon Fire Max 11 is the latest top dog of Amazon’s tablet line-up and is entering a crowded mid-range market. While it doesn’t boast top-of-the-line specs, it’s a tablet that should be satisfactory for those on a budget looking for a larger display.

With the Fire Max 11, Amazon has departed from its traditional design aesthetic. They have replaced the plastic with aluminum, making it feel more premium. Slimmer bezels contribute greatly to the modern look, and the weight sits comfortably at 490g. Since it’s a tablet with a significant bulk, an optional kickstand accessory enhances its versatility for entertainment.

While not class-leading, it’s equipped with an upgraded camera over the previous Fire tablets, like the Fire HD 10 and 10 Plus. The rear 8MP and the front-facing 2MP sensors provide adequate image quality for video calls and casual photography.

The tablet sports a Mediatek MT8188J octa-core processor with 4GB of RAM. There are 64GB or 128GB options for storage, plus a microSD slot to expand it to 1TB.

The Fire Max 11 is more than capable of multitasking, and users can seamlessly switch between applications with minimal lag. But, don’t get me wrong, it still won’t compete with high-end tablets in benchmark scores.

The 11-inch display boasts a crisp 2000 x 1200 pixel resolution. Viewing angles and color reproduction are decent, especially compared to previous Amazon tablet models.

This time around, the tablet is equipped with a dual speaker system for that extra audio punch. It won’t blow you away, but it’s an improvement over the usual single-speaker setup of previous Amazon tablets.

It still runs Amazon’s FireOS with security updates for four years. Ads are still sprinkled on the lock screen, but you can deactivate this permanently by paying a little extra. However, the ads didn’t bother us at all as they weren’t too intrusive.

Battery life is a bit of a letdown, as our tests only lasted 6 hours playing an HD YouTube video on a loop. However, standby time is impressive as it lost virtually no power overnight.

Yes, the Amazon Fire Max 11 walks a fine line by offering a near-premium experience minus the price tag. There are downsides, like the lack of apps and access to the Google Play Store. But if you can live with those and are embedded into the Alexa ecosystem, it might surprise you.

Pros

  • Decent performance for its price
  • Expandable storage is a plus
  • Act as an Alexa smart display
  • Affordable 10-inch tablet for entertainment

Cons

  • Amazon-centric content
  • Slow loading times

The Amazon Fire HD 10 belongs – together with the Fire HD 10 Plus – at the top of Amazon’s tablet range. The Fire HD 10 is available for about $150 and offers 3GB of RAM. The Fire HD 10 Plus costs about $180, has 4GB of RAM, and supports wireless charging. In addition, the Fire HD 10 Plus has a slightly higher-quality build.

However, that is where the differences between the two tablets end. In practice, the differences will probably not be noticed by most users and we, therefore, recommend buying the cheaper Amazon Fire HD 10, which we will now discuss in more detail.

The display of the Amazon Fire HD 10 has 10.1 inches and has a resolution of 1920 x 1200 pixels. Streaming in HD from Netflix and other OTT services is also possible on the tablet. The audio quality of the Amazon Fire HD 10 is also remarkable.

Regrettably, the plastic casing of the tablet does not provide a feeling of luxury and it is notably thicker than many other tablets at 9.2mm. Additionally, its weight can be considered somewhat heftier than average since it weighs 465g. Under the hood, there’s an octa-core processor with 3GB of RAM. The performance is solid considering the price.

Games like Asphalt 9 sometimes stutter considerably, but PUBG Mobile runs pleasantly smooth with HD graphics. Most games can be played well with lowered graphics settings. The tablet comes with 32GB/64GB of internal storage, which can be expanded via microSD card. The tablet has a 2-megapixel front and a 5-megapixel rear camera.

A Bluetooth keyboard cover for the Amazon Fire HD is also available for about $50. The keyboard is easy to type on and the build quality looks solid, but it does not have a trackpad.

The Amazon Fire HD 10 runs Fire OS, Amazon’s own operating system that is based on Android and provides access to Amazon’s app store, media library and services. The Amazon Fire HD 10 also has Alexa and the Echo Show mode directly on board. Although not all Google apps are available, the Google Play Store is relatively easy to install. We will explain how exactly that works at the end of this article.

Amazon itself states a battery life of up to 12 hours for the tablet. That is believable because the Amazon Fire HD 10 lasted 9 hours in our test, in which we played an HD YouTube video at maximum brightness in a continuous loop.

Overall, the Amazon Fire HD 10 is an inexpensive, good 10-inch entertainment tablet for streaming and occasional gaming.

Amazon Fire HD 8 Plus: 8-inch tablet at affordable pricing

Amazon Fire HD 8 Plus 2022 test

Amazon Fire HD 8 Plus on* Amazon

Amazon Fire HD 8 Plus 2022 Specs
Display Size8-inch
800 x 1280 pixel resolution
ProcessorMediatek MT8169A
RAM3 GB
Storage32 GB or 64 GB
Expandable up to 1 TB

Pros

  • USB-C and wireless charging
  • Good build quality for its price
  • Reliable battery life
  • Handy with other Amazon devices

Cons

  • Poor camera
  • FireOS is still limited

The Amazon Fire HD 8 Plus costs $120. The tablet has an 8-inch display with a resolution of 1280 x 800 pixels and a 60Hz refresh rate. It is sufficiently bright for indoor use. Unfortunately, the screen of the Amazon Fire HD 8 Plus is not laminated.

This tablet has HD resolution for streaming Netflix, Prime Video and the like with good audio quality for its size. Crafted entirely of plastic to guarantee strength according to the maker’s claim, it, unfortunately, does not have a fingerprint scanner or facial recognition capabilities.

The device includes a 2-megapixel front camera and a 5-megapixel rear camera, though the image quality does not lend itself to capturing stunning images.

Inside the Amazon Fire HD 8 Plus is a MediaTek MT8169A hexa-core processor and 3GB of RAM. The internal storage is either 32GB or 64GB. In addition, the storage can be expanded by up to 1TB via a microSD card. The tablet also has a USB-C 2.0 port. There is no LTE version.

Although the hardware performance has increased compared with the predecessor, the processor’s performance is still significantly weaker than that of the slightly more expensive Realme Pad mini, for example. However, the graphics performance is better in comparison.

The Amazon Fire HD 8 Plus performs well for PUBG Mobile and Asphalt 9, running with high-definition graphics. Additionally, other games such as World of Tanks and League of Legends also run smoothly on this device – albeit at low graphic settings. Despite the lower resolution, you can expect buttery-smooth gameplay from these titles!

Simple multitasking is also no problem for the Amazon Fire HD 8 Plus. For example, using YouTube and Google Chrome in parallel is no problem. The Amazon Fire HD 8 Plus runs Amazon’s in-house Fire OS, which is based on Android 11. Amazon’s policy of providing regular updates guarantees that the Fire HD 8 Plus will remain current and up-to-date for an extended period. Not only that but Alexa is built right into the device along with a special Echo Show mode.

As with all Amazon tablets, all Google apps are missing. However, the Google Play Store can easily be installed on the Amazon Fire HD 8 Plus as well.

In our battery test, the Amazon Fire HD 8 Plus achieved a great runtime of 9.75 hours. For this test, we again ran an HD YouTube video in an endless loop. The Amazon Fire HD 8 Plus is a recommendable tablet for smart spenders who are looking for a cheap 8-inch device.

If you are willing to spend a little more, the Realme Pad mini is also worth a recommendation. The 8-inch tablet comes with a chic metal case, laminated display, Google Android and a stronger performance. But the software update policy is probably better in the Amazon Fire HD 8 Plus.

Amazon Fire HD 8: Ultra affordable but not recommended

Amazon Fire HD 8 2022 Specs
Display Size8-inch
800 x 1280 pixel resolution
ProcessorMediatek MT8169A
RAM2 GB
Storage32 GB or 64 GB
Expandable up to 1 TB

Pros

  • Faster processor from the previous generation
  • Bright display
  • Lightweight
  • Excellent battery life

Cons

  • Display could be sharper
  • Expect the occasional slowdowns

The Amazon Fire HD 8 costs $100 and is thus $20 cheaper than the Amazon Fire HD Plus. However, we recommend everyone to rather put $20 more on the table and rather go for the Amazon Fire HD Plus.

Both the Amazon Fire HD 8 and the Amazon Fire HD 8 Plus have the same processor — MediaTek MT8169A Hexa-Core. However, the Amazon Fire HD 8 only has 2 GB of RAM and not 3GB like the Fire HD 8 Plus. The 1GB of RAM causes some games like PUBG Mobile to crash often, while they run smoothly on the Amazon Fire HD 8 Plus. Asphalt 9 also crashed often on the Amazon Fire HD 8 in our test, whereas there were no problems on the Fire HD 8 Plus with the graphics settings turned down.

Apart from that, the quality of the rear camera on the Amazon Fire HD 8 is slightly worse than of its big brother. However, this does not matter that much since, to be honest, both tablets offer a rather mediocre camera quality.

The other features like build quality, display, software and battery life are identical in the Amazon Fire HD and Amazon Fire HD Plus.

In any case, we recommend choosing the Amazon Fire HD Plus over the Amazon Fire HD, since the larger RAM makes a noticeable difference in performance, as mentioned before. The $20 surcharge is worth it.

Amazon Fire 7 2022: Solid tablet at a bargain price

Amazon Fire 7 test

Amazon Fire 7 on* Amazon

Amazon Fire HD 7 2022
Display Size7-inch
1024 x 600 pixel resolution
ProcessorMediaTek MT8168V/B
RAM2 GB
Storage16 GB or 32 GB
Expandable up to 1 TB

Pros

  • Affordable Alexa control center
  • USB-C charging port
  • Upgraded specs and battery life than predecessor
  • Expandable storage

Cons

  • Low-resolution display
  • Base models come with ads

The Amazon Fire 7 costs only $60. How many tablets can you expect for this price? If you want simple things like surfing the web or streaming, the tablet’s performance is quite sufficient.

The tablet is designed with thick black display bezels and a plastic casing, which lends it an unfinished feel. It might seem chunky at 9.67mm but weighs only 282g for easy portability. Despite its affordable price point, the device offers several convenient features such as USB C 2.0 port, MicroSD card reader and 3.5mm headphone jack.

Equipped with 2-megapixel cameras at the front and back, this device offers decent image and video quality in good lighting conditions.

The Amazon Fire 7 2022 has a 2GHz MediaTek MT8168A quad-core processor and 2GB of RAM. When it comes to storage, there are 16GB and 32GB options. There is no version with LTE.

The performance of the Amazon Fire 7 is of course no high-flyer and plays in the lowest league, but the hardware is quite sufficient for simple apps and applications. Thus, you can surf with Google Chrome or watch YouTube or Netflix without any problems. The Alexa voice assistant also works flawlessly on the tablet, and you can of course read your Kindle e-books without problems. However, you will have to do without multitasking on the Amazon Fire 7.

The 7-inches LCD screen has a resolution of 1024 x 600 pixels. The pixel density is thus quite low, but okay for this price. The viewing angle stability and color reproduction are pretty good and the brightness is also okay for indoor use. However, the display is not laminated, which is acceptable considering the price. Furthermore, the display of the Amazon Fire 7 is quite susceptible to fingerprints. This could be due to a lack of coating on the screen.

There is only one speaker that offers okayish sound quality that might be hard to get by in noisy surroundings. However, the sound is sufficient for watching movies on the couch. However, if you are cooking and want to communicate with Alexa at the same time, the weak sound can be a bit annoying.

The Amazon Fire 7 also comes with Fire OS, which is based on Android. It is great that Amazon wants to provide security updates for four years. Advertisements are sometimes visible on the lock screen. You can deactivate this permanently by paying a nominal amount. The ads did not bother us when we tested the tablet.

In our battery test, the Amazon Fire 7 lasted a great 10 hours. We played an HD YouTube video in an endless loop at maximum brightness.

If you want to spend as little money as possible on your tablet and can live with many limitations compared to more expensive models, you get a solid device with the Amazon Fire 7 at an unbeatable price of $60.
