10 Best Word Games on Your Android Device

Wordscapes

If you’re playing a word game on your phone, you expect it to be in one of several categories. However, Wordscapes combines the elements of crossword puzzles, anagrams, and word searches, giving it a unique play style that quickly hooks you in.

The goal of the game is simple. Connect the scrambled letters to form words that fill up the crossword grid. There are over 10,000 levels to play that range from easy to difficult, with new ones added daily.

One gameplay mode I always return to whenever I open Wordscapes is the Daily Puzzle. It gets a bit more challenging than some of the others, which I enjoy. Another feature I enjoy about the game is its offline play, which can be useful in certain situations.

Crossword Puzzle by Redstone

Ahh, yes, crosswords are a classic, and Crossword Puzzle by Redstone is as traditional as you can get. If you’re a fan of grid crosswords, you’ll absolutely love this game. The app allows you to solve thousands of puzzles from seasoned and indie constructors for free without a subscription.

When you open the game, you’ll be presented with different puzzle packs that range between easy, medium, hard, and very hard. They also come in different grid sizes, from the classic (15×15) to the midi (9×9) and the mini (5×5).

After selecting a pack and a puzzle, you can start filling it up like the daily crossword you find in the newspaper. The best part about the crossword puzzles app is that you can play it even if you’re offline.

Gubbins

I was introduced to Gubbins courtesy of a short TikTok video by Hank Green. When I tried it out, it surely did not disappoint. It’s a charming and innovative game that combines elements of Scrabble while introducing a few twists.

As you solve the puzzle, you’ll come across “Gubbins,” characters that either help or mess up your game. They add a layer of strategy to the already challenging gameplay, which certainly keeps you on your toes.

It is free to download and play, with access to different game modes like the classic and daily challenges. However, if you enjoy the game and want to experience the Endless Mode and Daily Streak, you will have to purchase the game.

Another upside of purchasing the game is that 10% of the game’s profits will be donated to The Foundation to Decrease Worldsuck, a non-profit organization founded by Hank Green.

Bonza Word Puzzle

Free word games for mobile devices have greatly evolved since you can combine different elements into one game. Bonza Word Puzzle does that and injects a dose of freshness by fusing gameplay from crosswords and jigsaw puzzles. The game then blends these into a seamless experience, which I find satisfying.

Whether you’re a casual player or a seasoned word game enthusiast, Bonza Word Puzzle has a game mode for you. I particularly enjoy Daily Challenge Puzzles, where I launch the game and rack my brain for 5 minutes.

If you’re looking for a game that perfectly balances relaxing and brain-racking, this is the game for you. Bonza is a game that provides that breath of fresh air to the genre and is a must-play. For word game fans, it’s one that I highly recommend.

NYT Games: Word Games & Sudoku

Besides its news and feature stories, The New York Times is known for its word games. They created an app that gives you access to all their games, from their classic crossword section, Spelling Bee, and the iconic Wordle.

As a fan of Will Shortz, the legendary crossword puzzle editor, I see that I don’t miss out on their daily puzzles. The only downside is that you need a subscription to play their full-sized crossword puzzle that’s published in the paper.

However, they do have other games, including mini daily puzzles that are free. Its vast selection of games more than make up for not including the classic.

Cryptogram – Puzzle Quotes

If you’re a fan of cryptography and breaking codes, you’ll love Cryptogram – Puzzle Quotes. It takes your classic word puzzle game and adds a code-breaking twist, giving it that added challenge.

The game aims to decipher the hidden text to reveal a motivational quote. It’s encrypted with a substitution cipher, where another letter replaces each letter. You must use your logic and frequency analysis skills to crack the code.

It’s one of my go-to games whenever I need a challenge to kickstart my brain before working and a bit of wisdom for inspiration.

Now, if you’re thinking that the game can be too hard, the bright side is that it has various difficulty levels that cater to players of all skill levels. A hint system will also nudge you in the right direction if you feel stuck.

Cryptogram – Puzzle Quotes is a well-designed and engaging game that combines the fun of word puzzles with cryptography.

Words With Friends 2

Zynga has refreshed their original Scrabble-like online competitive word game with Words with Friends 2. As for gameplay, it’s like Scrabble, where you place letter tiles on the board to create words. It does keep its social aspect, allowing you to play the game with others.

The main difference between the first version and this is that new single-player features like Solo Mode and Daily Challenges. These add variety to the game, especially when you’re offline. I have played the original version, and when the new one came, I downloaded it and started challenging other players.

I’m not a Scrabble pro, nor am I in the top 10 percentile player. However, playing with others makes it exciting and offers some unexpected twists.

Knotwords

If you’re a puzzle game enthusiast, you might be familiar with KenKen and Sudoku. Knotwords combines this with crosswords and anagrams to create one of the more unique word puzzle games for your Android device.

When I first tried the game, I was confused about how to play it. I didn’t catch on to it for a couple of days. However, after playing it again, I got the hang of it and truly enjoyed its unique gameplay and complexity.

The entire puzzle is divided into smaller sections marked with dotted lines. Each section has a set of letters that you need to use to create words like a crossword. It can be challenging, and the game also offers hints to help you progress and find the right word.

Ord.

If there’s a standout word game from this list, it’s Ord. with its innovative and minimalistic approach to wordplay. It’s a unique game since it’s a narrative that progresses based on the word you chose. Your choices have significant consequences, leading you down to different outcomes.

The game does not come with flashy graphics and let’s at least three words do most of the talking. It forces you to use your imagination and feel ownership of the narrative since you’re actively crafting your adventure.

Ord is a deceptively simple game, and I fell victim to it when I first started playing it. I remember first picking the wrong word and seeing “End.” that’s when I was hooked. It’s also a game that doesn’t require much time, but I keep returning to finish the different stories.

Sticky Terms

If there’s an award for the most unique word game on Android, it has to go to Sticky Terms. It’s a game that teaches you some untranslatable words in different languages. You will be greeted with fragments of words and must figure out how to stick them together to form a word.

There are over 150 words to discover, each with a unique meaning and pronunciation. You’ll learn words like “thrumari,” which translates to “thunder bread” in Icelandic for the flatulence it causes after eating.

It’s a fun way to learn new words, especially those from other languages and cultures. It’s one of the word games on this list that surprised me the most, as when I read the description, I had a hard time understanding how it would work. But, upon experiencing the game, it’s certainly a fresh take on the genre.
