Amazon Fire HD 8 Plus 2022: The Basics

The Amazon Fire HD 8 Plus 2022 is a simple and sturdy tablet with a plastic body and comes in gray. It measures 201.9 x 137.4 x 9.6 mm and weighs 342 g, making it easy to hold and carry around. The tablet has an 8-inch IPS LCD screen with thick bezels around it.

The tablet is powered by a Mediatek MT8169A processor, a hexa-core chip with six 2.0 GHz Cortex-A55 cores. It also comes with a Mali-G52 GPU for graphics. The processor is not known to be powerful and may struggle with multitasking or demanding games or apps. However, it’s enough for casual use, like browsing and streaming.

The tablet has 3 GB of RAM paired with 32 GB or 64 GB of internal storage. A microSD card slot allows you to expand the storage up to 1 TB.

On the OS front, it runs Android 11 with Fire OS 8, a customized version that puts Amazon’s apps and services front and center. It gives you access to the Amazon Appstore, which has thousands of apps and games, but not as many as Google Play Store.

If you have an Alexa smart home, the tablet gives you access to their assistant, allowing you to control your other devices with your voice.

One of the main features of the Fire HD 8 Plus is wireless charging support. Pair it with the wireless charging dock from Amazon, and you can use it as a smart display with Alexa. However, the tablet has no security features like a fingerprint scanner or face unlock.

Pricing and Availability

The great thing about Amazon Fire tablets is that they’re always available on the Amazon website. Whether you’re in the US, UK, or other markets, as long as you have Amazon, you’ll be able to get the Amazon Fire HD 8 Plus 2022.

The base 32 GB model starts at $119. This is the ad-supported version that displays sponsored screensavers on your device’s lock screen. If you don’t want to see these ads, the same model costs $135. The 64 GB ad-supported model costs $149, and the ad-free version costs $165.

Meanwhile, in the UK, prices are similar, with the 32 GB model starting at £119 and the 64 GB configuration costing £149.

Amazon Fire HD 8 Plus 2022 Alternatives

The Amazon Fire HD 8 Plus 2022 is a decent tablet for the price. However, if it does not suit your needs or preferences due to its Amazon-first approach, some alternatives exist.

A popular budget tablet you can get is the Samsung Galaxy Tab A7 Lite. It’s a similar 8-inch tablet with comparable specs and features. Its downside is that it does not have wireless charging and no Alexa compatibility.

If you’re looking for a tablet in the same price range with a larger display, the Lenovo Tab M10 is worth a check. It has slightly more memory and storage, plus a more powerful processor, giving that extra performance.

Amazon Fire HD 8 Plus
Because of its small RAM, I cannot recommend the Amazon Fire HD 8. However, the Fire HD 8 Plus can be a good choice if you're looking for a very inexpensive 8-inch tablet. It's good enough for most tasks, the battery life is long, and it's affordable. Sadly, the Google Play Store is missing out of the box.
  • Long battery life
  • Rugged build
  • Very affordable
  • HD 8 Plus good for gaming
  • Integrated Alexa
  • Fire HD 8 has too small RAM
  • Missing Google Play Store
  • Display not laminated
