Surface Pro 9: Overview
Positioned as an all-rounder Microsoft’s Surface series, the Surface Pro 9 works for daily tasks like emails, videos and internet surfing. It can also play some games, edit images in Photoshop and edit videos, but the lack of a dedicated graphics card puts limits on the complexity of such tasks.
Users of the Surface Pro 9 could pair it with the Signature Keyboard, which we rate as “the best tablet keyboard available”. The Surface Pen or Surface Slim Pen 2 also complements the Surface Pro 9 for users who want to use the Surface Pro 9 as a writing pad or drawing canvas.
Microsoft says that you can get 15.5 hours of battery life. Using our testing methodology, we got 4.5 hours of battery life.
Surface Pro 9: ARM or Intel?
The Surface Pro 9 saw the Microsoft SQ3 ARM processor, which benefits users by providing a longer battery life and 5G connectivity. The downside is that ARM chips cannot run software that the Surface Pro 9’s Intel-based counterparts can run. You will have to download the ARM-compatible version or use an emulator.
Price and Availability
The Surface Pro 9 starts from $899 to $1,849 depending on configuration.
The Core i5 is the cheapest processor, then the Core i7, then the SQ3 processor. Prices ascend as you go from 8GB to 32GB RAM as well as storage, which ranges from 256GB to 1TB.
The Signature Keyboard is not included and costs $139.99. If you buy the keyboard with the Surface Slim Pen, you’ll pay $279.99.
Surface Pro 9 Alternatives
The Surface Pro 9 offers a tablet-like experience based around Windows 11, so if you want a Windows 11 tablet, you have these options:
If you want a gaming, Windows tablet: ASUS ROG Flow Z13
If you want something even more compact: Microsoft Surface Go 4
Otherwise, the flagship products from Apple and Samsung are worth considering. The iPad Pro 12.9-inch offers an M2 chip which means high performance running on the iPadOS platform, while Samsung’s Tab S9 series offers a high-end Android experience.
